  • Autumn 1 - Castles

This half-term, Holly class learnt lots about castles. We learnt about the different features of castles, the history of castles and compared the features of Bedford Castle to the features of Matsumoto Castle in Japan.

We also learnt about the Battle of Hastings, and even re-enacted it in the playground!

    Science

In science, we investigated how different materials affect the impact on a model castle wall. We built a small wall and tested four projectiles — a paper ball, play-dough, a sponge, and a rubber piece.

Before testing, we predicted that the rubber piece would make the biggest impact because it is heavier and bounces more. We kept the test fair by throwing each object from the same distance and angle.

After observing the results, we found that the paper and sponge made almost no marks, the play-dough left small dents, and the rubber ball caused the largest impact. Our prediction was correct. We concluded that heavier and firmer materials cause greater impact.

    Art

In art, we have started preparing for our castle sculptures made out of clay. This week, we explored a variety of clay techniques, such as rolling, pinching, pulling. We also learnt different ways to join pieces of clay together, including scoring, slipping, and blending the edges to make strong, smooth connections. It was exciting to experiment with these methods and see how they can be used to create the detailed shapes and textures we’ll need for our castles.

    ICT

In computing we were learning to be astronauts and programme our spaceships to fly to different planets.

We have also had a lot of fun learning to play recorders in music and working on our team building skills in P.E.
